(When the diameters of polymer fiber materials are shrunk from micrometers (e.g. 10–100 mm) to sub microns or nanometers, there appear several amazing characteristics such as very large surface area to volume ratio (this ratio for a nanofiber can be as large as 103 times of that of a microfiber), flexibility in surface functionalities, and superior mechanical performance (e.g. stiffness and tensile strength) compared with any other known form of the material. These outstanding properties make them suitable for a wide range of applications from medical to consumer products and industrial to high-tech applications for filters, aerospace, capacitors, transistors, drug delivery systems, battery separators, energy storage, fuel cells, and information technology. These nanofibers can protect the respiratory system from inhalation of hazardous particles, by efficient filtration and adsorption of small particles. The size of most of the dust particles and airborne hazardous contaminants is between 0.5-3 micrometers, so they can easily pass through ordinary masks. The nanofibrous masks, however, can efficiently block out airborne particles of 0.3 micrometers or smaller.
